When an Indian manufacturer quotes a corrugated box, they will typically reference a board grade - a combination of paper weights and grades that defines the board's strength. The most common format you'll see is something like 150/120/150 or 180/150/180, where each number represents the weight in grams per square metre (GSM) of each layer:
- Outer liner (first number): The outside face of the box. Heavier liner = better puncture and burst resistance.
- Corrugated medium (middle number): The fluted wavy layer inside. Heavier medium = better stacking strength.
- Inner liner (last number): The inside face of the box.

The flute - the wave-shaped corrugated layer - determines how the box handles compression, cushioning, and stacking load. The main flute profiles used in export packaging:
B-flute (3mm thick): Smaller, tighter flutes. Good flat crush resistance and puncture resistance. Common for retail packaging, printed boxes, and goods where the box walls need to be relatively thin. B-flute is the standard for most printed shipping boxes.
C-flute (4mm thick): The most widely used flute type globally. Balances cushioning, stacking strength, and printability. If you are ordering general-purpose corrugated boxes from India, you are most likely getting C-flute unless specified otherwise.
B-flute vs C-flute: C-flute provides slightly better top-to-bottom stacking strength; B-flute offers better flat crush resistance and is more material-efficient. ECT vs Burst Strength: Which Specification Matters for You
You will encounter two strength ratings when reviewing corrugated box specifications:
Burst Strength (Mullen Test) measures how much hydraulic pressure the board can withstand before rupturing, expressed in PSI or kPa. A higher burst strength means better resistance to puncture and rough handling.
Edge Crush Test (ECT) measures how much vertical load the corrugated board can carry before the flutes collapse, expressed in lb/in. This is the stacking strength - how much weight the box can bear when other boxes are stacked on top of it.
Which to specify: For export shipments going by sea freight, ECT is the more important rating. Boxes in a shipping container are stacked and compressed vertically for weeks. A box with high burst strength but low ECT will be crushed before it reaches port. Common ECT requirements for export:
- Light goods (< 10 kg): 23 ECT minimum
- Standard export (10–25 kg): 32 ECT minimum
- Heavy goods (25–50 kg): 44 ECT or higher

There is no single universal standard for corrugated box sizes - dimensions are determined by what fits the product being packed. However, some sizes are common in export trade because they palletise efficiently for sea freight containers. Standard export pallet dimensions are 1200mm × 1000mm (international) or 1200mm × 800mm (Euro pallet).

Do not limit yourself to the sizes above if a different dimension suits your product better.
Regular Slotted Carton (RSC) vs Other Box Styles
The vast majority of corrugated shipping boxes worldwide are RSC (Regular Slotted Cartons) - the familiar box where all four flaps on top and bottom meet at the centre when closed. RSC is the most cost-efficient style to manufacture and palletise.
Other styles you may encounter:
HSC (Half Slotted Container): An RSC with no top flaps, used with a separate lid. Common for heavier goods packed from above, or where frequent access to the box contents is required.
FOL (Full Overlap): The top and bottom outer flaps extend the full width of the box and fully overlap when closed, rather than just meeting at the centre. This adds an extra layer of corrugated at the top and bottom, improving crush resistance by 20–30%. A sensible upgrade for heavy goods without significantly increasing cost.
Die-cut custom shapes: Trays, display boxes, partitioned inserts, and irregular shapes. These require custom cutting dies (typically $100–$300 USD per design), but the per-unit cost converges with RSC at moderate volumes.

How Printing Affects Box Grade Choice
If you need branded corrugated boxes with multi-colour printing, the flute and liner choice affects print quality:
- B-flute provides a flatter surface than C-flute, producing sharper flexographic print results
- Kraft liner (brown) prints with better colour fidelity than test liner at the same GSM
- White-top liner (white coating on kraft base) provides the cleanest print surface for high-quality branded boxes
For unprinted or one-colour printed export boxes, liner colour and surface quality don't matter. For retail-ready branded corrugated packaging, specify white-top liner and B-flute if print quality is a priority.
