RSC Corrugated Box Manufacturer in India: Factory-Direct Export to USA and UK

Rows of flat-cut regular slotted cartons on a factory production line in India, ready for folding and export to US and UK buyers

The RSC (Regular Slotted Carton) is the most widely used corrugated box format globally - the familiar box where all four top and bottom flaps meet at the centre when closed. If you are buying corrugated boxes in bulk from India for US or UK import, RSC is almost certainly the format you need. This guide covers RSC construction, how to specify one correctly for Indian manufacture, and what factory-direct supply looks like from Gujarat.

What Makes an RSC an RSC

An RSC (Regular Slotted Carton) has a specific structural definition under FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) code 0201:

  • All four flaps on the top and bottom are of equal length (half the box width)
  • The outer flaps meet at the centre when the box is closed
  • The inner flaps are shorter (approximately half the box depth minus 3 to 5mm clearance)
  • The box is scored and slotted to fold flat for storage and erect for packing

Why RSC dominates: it is the most material-efficient box design for its cubic volume. Compared to alternatives like FOL (Full Overlap) or HSC (Half Slotted Container), RSC uses the minimum amount of board per cubic centimetre of interior volume. At scale, this translates directly to lower cost per box.

The only significant limitation of RSC is that the flaps meet at the centre rather than fully overlapping - meaning the top and bottom faces each have a seam at the mid-point. For applications requiring extra strength at the top or bottom (very heavy goods, stacking loads applied directly to the top flaps), FOL construction is a straightforward upgrade.

Specifying an RSC Box from India

A complete RSC specification for an Indian manufacturer includes:

Internal dimensions (L x W x H in mm): Always internal. External dimensions depend on board thickness, which varies by flute type. For example, C-flute single wall adds approximately 8 to 9mm to each external dimension; BC double wall adds approximately 14 to 15mm. Specifying internal ensures the product fits.

Flute type: C-flute is the standard default for general export RSC boxes. B-flute for retail display or light goods. BC double wall for heavy goods (over 15 kg) or long sea freight routes.

Board grade (GSM): State the liner and medium GSM (e.g., 150/120/150 for standard single wall, 180/150/180 for heavy export single wall). Or specify the ECT rating you require (e.g., 32 ECT lb/in minimum) and let the factory propose a board grade that meets it.

Printing: Number of colours (1 to 4), Pantone references, artwork specification. Single-colour flexo is standard for unbranded export boxes (brand name and country of origin only). Multi-colour for branded retail-facing packaging.

Closure method: Standard RSC is taped closed (H-tape pattern on top and bottom). If you need glued closure, self-locking bottom, or machine-sealed top, specify this explicitly.

Pallet configuration: How many boxes per pallet layer, how many layers high. This is not part of the box specification but affects freight efficiency and is worth confirming at the quoting stage.

Standard RSC Sizes for Export from India

There is no universal standard for RSC dimensions - boxes are made to fit the product. However, these sizes are common in export trade because they palletise efficiently against 1200 x 1000mm (ISO) or 1200 x 800mm (Euro) pallet footprints:

Internal Dimensions (L x W x H) Common Export Application
300 x 200 x 150 mm Small consumer goods, sample kits
400 x 300 x 200 mm Light e-commerce goods
400 x 300 x 300 mm Standard retail goods, clothing
500 x 400 x 300 mm Mid-weight consumer goods
600 x 400 x 400 mm Apparel, textiles, homeware
600 x 500 x 500 mm Agricultural products, food items
800 x 600 x 600 mm Large or heavy industrial goods

For products that do not fit standard dimensions, Indian manufacturers produce custom sizes at no meaningful price premium at orders of 3,000 units or above. The tooling cost for a new RSC die is typically included in the per-unit price at those volumes.

RSC vs FOL: When to Upgrade

For most applications, RSC is the right choice. Consider upgrading to FOL (Full Overlap Slotted Container, FEFCO 0203) when:

  • Product weight exceeds 25 to 30 kg per box
  • Boxes will be stacked on pallets at 8 or more high in long-duration storage
  • The contents put downward pressure directly on the top flaps during packing (rather than being supported by the walls)

FOL outer flaps fully overlap and are typically glued or taped, adding an extra layer of corrugated at top and bottom and improving top-to-bottom compression strength by 20 to 30% without a significant per-unit cost increase. For heavy industrial goods from India, FOL double wall is a common specification.

Custom Printing on RSC Boxes from India

Custom printed RSC boxes are the most common printed corrugated format ordered by US and UK brands. The RSC's flat panel construction gives flexographic printing a consistent surface across the full length and width of each box face.

What to specify for printed RSC boxes:

  • Liner type: White-top liner (white-coated kraft) gives the cleanest print surface for branded boxes. Brown kraft liner is standard for utilitarian export boxes with minimal printing (address, country of origin, fragile text).
  • Print method: Flexographic printing (up to 4 Pantone colours) is standard. For photo-quality or full-colour artwork, offset litho laminate is available - a sheet is printed offset and then laminated to the corrugated board. Litho laminate is more expensive and adds 5 to 7 working days to lead time.
  • Print area: Specify which panels require printing. Most branded RSC boxes print all four side panels plus the top flaps. Printing the bottom flaps is usually unnecessary.
  • Pantone references: Provide Pantone Coated (C) references for each colour. Water-based flexo inks are standard on corrugated.

Custom printed RSC boxes from India for UK and US brands typically require a minimum of 5,000 units per print configuration. For smaller quantities (under 2,000 units) where custom printing is required, digital printing on E-flute board is an option worth discussing with the factory.

RSC Boxes for E-Commerce and Amazon FBA

RSC is the dominant format for Amazon FBA and direct-to-consumer e-commerce fulfilment because it is compatible with all major automated carton-sealing equipment (H-tape sealer, random case erectors) and palletises efficiently for both B2B replenishment orders and FBA inbound shipments.

FBA-specific requirements to check with your Indian manufacturer:

  • ISTA 2A or Amazon APASS testing: Amazon requires packaging to survive ISTA 2A transit testing. If you are selling hazardous materials, oversized goods, or fragile items, the box must be tested to the correct protocol. Request an ISTA-tested sample specification from the factory, or run the testing yourself in the US before committing to production.
  • Suffocation warning: If the box ships with any polybag or plastic film inside, the outer corrugated box must carry a suffocation warning in accordance with Amazon's requirements.
  • Label placement: Ensure the box panel dimensions leave adequate clear zones for shipping labels and FNSKU barcodes without overlapping the artwork.
  • Weight per box: Amazon's standard FBA label requirements change at 50 lb (22.7 kg). Boxes above this weight require a "Team Lift" label. Specify the product weight per box when ordering so the factory can recommend the correct board grade and include space for the required label.

For high-volume FBA replenishment (palletised inbound), RSC from India typically requires 8 to 16 weeks from specification to first warehouse delivery for a new customer. Repeat orders typically run 6 to 10 weeks.

Cost Comparison: RSC from India vs Domestic US/UK Supply

Factory-direct RSC boxes from India typically land at 30 to 50% below equivalent domestic pricing in the US and UK, even after sea freight, import duty, and customs clearance costs are included. The gap is wider for larger formats and higher board grades, where raw material cost is a bigger component of the price.

The key conditions for this saving to hold:

  • Order volume is at least 3,000 to 5,000 units per specification (smaller volumes may not justify the freight cost per unit)
  • You have sufficient lead time (10 to 16 weeks for a first order)
  • Your specification is fixed for the production run (mid-run changes are expensive)

For buyers with consistent, predictable demand and sufficient order volumes, the economics of India-sourced RSC boxes are difficult to match domestically.
