Custom Printed Boxes with Your Logo: A Buyer's Guide from an Indian Manufacturer

Every box you ship is seen by warehouse staff, delivery drivers, retail workers, and finally your customer. A plain brown carton does the job. A custom printed box with your logo does the job and builds your brand at the same time, at a surprisingly small premium when you order at volume directly from a manufacturer.

This guide explains how custom box printing actually works, what you need to prepare, and how to get branded boxes made to your exact specification from an Indian factory.

Custom printing turns necessary packaging spend into a branding asset that travels with every order.

Why Buyers Choose Custom Printed Boxes

The case for printing your boxes goes beyond appearance:

Brand visibility through the supply chain. Your boxes sit in distributor warehouses, on retail backroom shelves, and on doorsteps. Printed branding works passively at every stage. For e-commerce businesses, the unboxing moment is often the only physical brand touchpoint a customer experiences.

Operational clarity. Printed handling instructions, SKU information, barcodes, and orientation arrows reduce mishandling and picking errors. Printing this information is more durable than labels, which peel and get applied inconsistently.

Retail compliance. Many retailers and marketplaces require specific markings on master cartons: product identifiers, country of origin, barcode formats, and safety information. Printing these into the box design guarantees consistency across every unit.

Perceived quality. Buyers judge products partly by their packaging. A cleanly printed carton signals an established, professional operation, which matters when your product sits next to a competitor's on a shelf.

The Printing Methods, Explained Simply

When you request quotes for custom printed boxes, the printing method determines cost, quality, and minimums. There are three main options for corrugated:

Flexographic printing (flexo) is the standard for corrugated boxes. Ink is applied through flexible printing plates directly onto the board. Flexo handles one to four colours, prints logos, text, and simple graphics crisply, and is very economical at volume. The plates are a one-time cost, and once made, they are reused across repeat orders. For most branded shipping boxes, flexo in one or two colours is the right choice.

Offset lithographic printing (litho lamination) produces photographic quality. The design is printed on a fine paper sheet which is then laminated onto the corrugated board. This is the method for retail-facing boxes with full-colour imagery, gradients, and fine detail. It costs more and adds a production step, so it makes sense for display packaging rather than transit cartons. Subscription box brands and DTC retailers looking for high-print-quality mailer boxes will find our mailer boxes for subscription brands guide covers the specific construction and print specifications for that format.

Digital printing requires no plates, which makes it flexible for very short runs and frequent artwork changes. Per-unit costs are higher at scale, so it suits sampling and small batches rather than container-volume orders.

For a typical importer ordering branded shipping cartons in bulk, flexo covers the requirement. If your project includes retail display boxes, a manufacturer that offers litho lamination can produce both in the same order.

What You Need to Prepare: Artwork Requirements

Getting your logo onto a box requires artwork in the right format. Prepare these before you approach a manufacturer:

Custom-printed corrugated shipping box with brand logo showing flexographic print quality Vector artwork. Your logo should be supplied as a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG, or vector PDF). Vector art scales to any size without losing sharpness. A photo or screenshot of your logo cannot be used directly for plate making.

Pantone (PMS) colour references. Flexo printing works with specific ink colours. If brand colour accuracy matters to you, provide Pantone codes rather than approximate descriptions. If you only have RGB or HEX values, the factory can convert them, but confirm the match on a physical sample.

Print placement plan. Decide which panels carry the logo and which carry handling marks, barcodes, or product information. A standard approach is the logo on the two large side panels, with shipping marks on the end panels.

Any compliance content. Country of origin marking, recycling symbols, retailer-specific codes, and safety warnings should be finalised before plates are made, because plate changes after production mean new plate costs.

A good manufacturer will send you a dieline (the flattened technical drawing of your box) with your artwork placed on it for approval before anything is manufactured. Review this carefully. What you approve on the dieline is what prints.

Forklift moving finished cartons through a production warehouse after printing Flexographic plates are a one-time setup. Once made, repeat orders print your branding identically every time.

Minimums, Lead Times, and Samples

Custom printing changes the economics of small orders because of plate setup, which is why minimum order quantities exist. Here is what to expect when ordering factory-direct from India:

Flexographic printing press producing branded corrugated boxes with multi-colour logo artwork Minimum order quantity. At Whizzpack, custom printed corrugated boxes start at 5,000 units. This spreads the plate cost across enough units that the printing premium per box becomes small.

Plates are reusable. Your first order carries the plate setup. Repeat orders of the same design print from existing plates, which improves repeat-order economics. This rewards consolidating your box designs rather than making frequent small artwork changes.

Sampling. Before a full production run, you should receive a physical sample: at minimum a white or plain sample of the box construction, and ideally a printed proof. Approving a printed sample protects both sides from surprises on colour and placement.

Lead times. Custom printed orders typically add a few days over plain boxes for plate making and print setup. Production for an export order generally runs 15 to 20 days, plus sea freight transit of roughly 25 to 35 days to the US East Coast and 20 to 30 days to UK ports. Plan your first branded order well ahead of when you need stock.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

After years of producing custom printed boxes for export buyers, the same avoidable issues come up repeatedly:

Approving artwork without a dieline review. Logos placed too close to fold lines get creased. Elements that cross panel edges misalign. Always review placement on the dieline, not just the flat logo.

Specifying too many colours for the job. Every flexo colour is a separate plate and a separate press station. A two-colour design executed well looks better than a four-colour design that added cost without adding impact.

Ignoring the board colour. Ink on brown kraft board looks different than ink on white board. Dark logos print well on kraft. Light or vibrant branding may need a white top liner. Ask for printed samples on the actual board you are ordering.

Forgetting the inside. Printing the inside of the box is possible and increasingly popular for unboxing experiences, but it must be specified upfront because it affects the production process.

No repeat-order plan. If you expect to reorder, tell the factory. They will store your plates and dieline, making repeat production faster and identical to the first run.

Ordering Custom Printed Boxes from India

The process with a factory-direct manufacturer looks like this:

  1. Share your requirement: box dimensions, quantity, board specification, and your artwork. If you do not know the board grade you need, our guide on single wall vs double wall corrugated boxes covers how to choose.
  2. Receive a dieline and quote. Review print placement and specification.
  3. Approve samples. Construction sample first, printed proof if colour accuracy is critical.
  4. Production and quality control. In-process print checks catch registration and colour drift during the run.
  5. Export documentation and shipping. A manufacturer experienced with US and UK buyers handles customs paperwork, and our guide on how to import corrugated boxes from India explains the import side step by step.

Whizzpack manufactures custom printed corrugated boxes with logo printing in one to four colours at our factory in Rajkot, Gujarat, and exports directly to businesses across the US and UK. Our in-house design team supports dieline creation and artwork preparation, and every order includes pre-shipment quality inspection.
