Corrugated Boxes for Pet Food Brands: A Sourcing Guide from India

The pet food market in the USA and UK has become one of the most commercially demanding packaging categories in the consumer goods sector. Brands are shipping dry kibble in 5kg to 20kg bags, wet food in cans, premium air-dried treats, and veterinary supplements - often through multiple channels simultaneously. Each format has its own secondary packaging requirement, and getting the specification wrong is expensive at the volumes a growing pet food brand moves.

For pet food brands sourcing corrugated secondary packaging at scale, factory-direct procurement from India offers lower landed costs, food-safe board specifications, and the moisture resistance performance that ambient pet food distribution demands. This guide covers what buyers need to specify.

Two Very Different Use Cases

Pet food brands typically operate two distinct corrugated packaging programmes, and the specification differs significantly between them.

Retail wholesale cases carry bags or cans of pet food from a warehouse to a pet retail chain, a veterinary practice, or a farm supply store. These are RSC boxes designed to hold standard pack configurations - 4 x 5kg bags, 24 x 400g cans, 12 x treat pouches. Compression strength, dimensional accuracy for palletised storage, and moisture resistance in ambient warehouse conditions are the priorities. Print is minimal: a stencil or simple flexo logo on the outside panel.

DTC subscription and gift boxes are a different product entirely. Pet food subscription services - the fastest-growing segment of the category in both the US and UK - ship branded boxes directly to consumers. The corrugated outer box is a brand touchpoint. Custom printing, premium interior surfaces, and a clean unboxing experience matter here in a way they do not for wholesale cases.

Most Indian corrugated manufacturers can supply both. The question is specifying correctly for each programme.

Flute Selection for Pet Food Packaging

The weight and fragility profile of pet food drives flute selection in a different direction from most consumer categories. Dry kibble in large bags is heavy. Wet food cans are dense and can develop condensation in transit. Treats and supplements are lighter but often need premium print surfaces. For a full comparison of flute profiles and how they affect strength, weight, and printability, see our B, C, and E flute comparison guide.

E flute (1.5mm) is the standard for premium DTC pet food subscription boxes, treat pouches, and supplement retail cartons. The smooth outer surface takes flexographic printing cleanly, and the thin board keeps the outer box lightweight for last-mile delivery economics. E flute is not appropriate for heavy dry kibble or wet food can cases.

B flute (3mm) is used for mid-weight wet food can cases and treat boxes where compression strength on pallets is needed but the load per carton is moderate. Better stacking performance than E flute, with a reasonable print surface for branded outer cartons.

C flute (4mm) is the standard choice for wholesale dry kibble cases carrying 4 to 6 large bags. The additional wall thickness provides the compression strength needed for palletised loads of 20kg to 25kg per case in ambient warehouse conditions.

BC double wall (7mm) is specified for the heaviest formats: bulk dry food cases carrying 6 x 20kg bags, multi-can pallet master cartons, or cases that will be stored in high-humidity environments such as farm supply warehouses. The dual-layer construction delivers significantly higher top-load resistance than single wall. Our guide on single wall vs double wall corrugated boxes covers this trade-off in detail.

Format Recommended Flute Reason
DTC subscription box E flute Premium print, lightweight
Treat and supplement retail case E or B flute Lower weight, shelf-ready format
Wet food can case (12-24 cans) B or C flute Standard can weight and stacking
Dry kibble case (4-6 x 5kg bags) C flute Compression strength for heavy loads
Bulk dry food or farm supply BC double wall Maximum top-load and humidity resistance

Moisture Resistance and Food-Safe Board

Pet food is typically stored in ambient conditions rather than refrigerated, but warehouse humidity is a genuine performance factor. A corrugated case that performs correctly at 50% relative humidity may begin to delaminate at 80% RH, which is common in distribution centres near ports or in tropical receiving markets.

Moisture-resistant liner. For dry kibble and treat cases, a water-resistant kraft liner treated with a light sizing agent provides adequate performance for standard ambient distribution. This is available as a standard option from Indian export-grade corrugated manufacturers.

Food-adjacent compliance. Corrugated secondary packaging for pet food does not typically contact the product directly: the primary packaging (the bag, can, or pouch) provides a full barrier. However, large pet retail chains and online platforms including Chewy, PetSmart, and Pets at Home in the UK increasingly request a food-contact declaration or food-safe board statement from secondary packaging suppliers. Indian corrugated manufacturers producing for the export market can supply virgin fibre liner with a food-contact statement on request.

Low-migration inks. If the inner surface of the corrugated box is printed - common in DTC subscription boxes where the interior is part of the brand presentation - water-based, low-migration inks meeting EU Regulation 10/2011 or equivalent FDA guidelines should be specified. This is the standard ink type at Whizzpack for all food-adjacent applications.

Recycled vs virgin fibre. For wholesale cases where no food-contact statement is required, recycled content liner reduces board cost and supports sustainability credentials. For retail programmes or DTC boxes where the buyer or retailer requires a food-safe declaration, virgin fibre liner is the correct specification.

Custom Printing for Pet Food Brands

Pet food is one of the most visually invested categories in consumer retail. Brand identity - the animal imagery, the ingredient photography, the lifestyle claims - is central to purchase decisions both in-store and online. The corrugated outer case is part of that brand surface for an increasing number of pet food brands.

Flexographic printing covers 1 to 4 Pantone-matched colours on the outer surface of the case. For wholesale cases, a simple 1-colour logo and product identifier is typical. For DTC subscription boxes, 4-colour flexo printing with brand imagery is the standard approach. Water-based inks are used throughout, maintaining food-adjacent compliance and recyclability.

Litho-laminate printing applies an offset-printed sheet to the outer liner before box conversion. The result is photo-quality imagery on corrugated board - the sharp animal portraits, ingredient close-ups, and lifestyle images that premium pet food brands use on retail shelf. For brands selling into specialist pet retail chains or operating a premium gifting programme, litho-laminate outer surfaces are increasingly expected by retail buyers. Our custom printed corrugated boxes guide for e-commerce brands covers artwork preparation and print file requirements in detail.

Interior surfaces. DTC pet food subscription boxes benefit from branded interior printing. A printed inner surface - in the brand colour, with a welcome message or ingredient highlight - converts the box opening into a brand moment. This is standard practice for premium pet food subscription services and is fully achievable in Indian corrugated production.

Eco-Friendly Credentials for Pet Food Brands

The pet food consumer is increasingly environmentally conscious, and brands face growing pressure from both consumers and retailers to demonstrate sustainable packaging choices. Corrugated board is well positioned here.

FSC chain-of-custody certified board is available from Whizzpack for pet food brands making explicit sustainability claims on their packaging. Recycled content liner with 70 to 100 percent post-consumer fibre is the standard for wholesale cases. Water-based inks avoid solvent emissions throughout the print process.

For DTC brands with a natural or raw food positioning, corrugated secondary packaging made from unbleached kraft with water-based inks and FSC certification aligns naturally with the product story. The board is fully recyclable in standard curbside paper and cardboard collection in both the US and UK - no special recycling stream needed. Our guide to eco-friendly packaging from India covers the full range of sustainable options available.

What to Ask Your Supplier Before Ordering

Before confirming a production run for pet food secondary packaging, ask these questions:

  1. Do you offer moisture-resistant liner as standard? For dry kibble cases destined for warehouse storage in high-humidity environments, this is a baseline requirement, not a premium option.

  2. Can you supply a food-contact statement for the board? Large pet retail buyers and e-commerce platforms increasingly require this. A factory that cannot produce one creates a supply chain risk as your retail programme grows.

  3. What recycled content percentage does your standard liner carry? For brands with sustainability commitments to retail buyers, a recycled content declaration per production run is increasingly required documentation.

  4. Do you produce EC double wall in-house? For heavy-format wholesale cases, ensuring the double wall board is produced under consistent quality control at the same facility as the case conversion reduces specification risk.

  5. What compression strength does your C flute achieve? Request an Edge Crush Test (ECT) rating. For a dry kibble case carrying 20kg to 25kg on a palletised ocean freight shipment, a minimum of 44 ECT is the standard benchmark.

Lead Times and MOQ

Standard production lead times from an Indian corrugated manufacturer to US or UK port run 35 to 45 days from approved artwork:

  • 7 to 10 days for plate making and pre-production approval
  • 10 to 15 days for the production run
  • 20 to 28 days sea freight from Mundra or JNPT to US East Coast, or 20 to 25 days to UK ports (Felixstowe, Southampton)

Minimum order quantities for pet food cases from India vary by format:

  • Plain wholesale cases in standard dimensions: typically 2,000 units per SKU
  • Flexo-printed cases: typically 5,000 units per SKU
  • Litho-laminate DTC subscription boxes: typically 1,000 to 2,000 units depending on board grade and finish

For brands with multiple SKUs - a dry food range, a wet food range, and a treat line - Indian factories will sometimes combine SKUs in a single production run to help buyers reach minimums more efficiently.

Why Source from India

India has a well-developed corrugated manufacturing sector with export capability across all major markets. For pet food brands, three factors make India a compelling sourcing route.

Cost advantage. Factory-direct procurement removes the European or US converter margin. At annual volumes above 30,000 units, the difference in landed cost per case is commercially significant even after sea freight is accounted for.

Board specification range. Indian export-grade manufacturers produce the full range of board specifications needed for pet food: E flute DTC boxes, B and C flute wholesale cases, BC double wall bulk cartons, moisture-resistant liner, virgin fibre food-adjacent board, and FSC-certified options across all grades.

Sustainability at scale. FSC-certified board, water-based inks, and recycled content liner are standard offerings from Indian export manufacturers - not premium additions. For pet food brands with sustainability commitments to their retail partners or end consumers, these credentials are available without the premium that eco-positioned European suppliers typically add.

Whizzpack manufactures corrugated boxes for food and pet food brands from Rajkot, Gujarat, with factory-direct export to the USA, UK, and Europe. We supply E, B, C, and BC double wall pet food cases with moisture-resistant options, flexo and litho-laminate printing, virgin fibre food-adjacent board, and FSC-certified board across all formats.
