The candle and home fragrance market in the USA and UK has grown significantly over the past decade. What started as a commodity category has become a design-led, brand-driven segment where the presentation of the product matters as much as the fragrance itself.
For most candle and fragrance brands, the primary packaging is glass: a jar, a vessel, a diffuser bottle, or a boxed candle set. Glass is heavy, fragile, and expensive. The secondary corrugated packaging around it has to protect the primary pack through a full distribution chain - from the manufacturer, through a warehouse, onto a retail shelf or into a consumer's hands.
Getting the secondary packaging specification right is not just about protection. It is also about the brand experience at the point of sale, the sustainability credentials for eco-conscious consumers and retailers, and the economics of importing packaging at the volumes a growing candle brand requires.
Why Corrugated is the Standard for Candle Secondary Packaging
Corrugated board is the dominant material for secondary packaging in the candle and fragrance category for four reasons.
Protection. The fluted inner layer of corrugated board acts as a cushion against impact and compression in transit. For glass containers that can weigh 300g to 800g each and are sensitive to lateral impact, this cushioning is the difference between a clean delivery and a breakage claim.
Printability. Corrugated board can be printed with brand-quality flexographic printing in multiple Pantone colours. In the candle category, where brand aesthetics drive purchasing decisions, the secondary box is a canvas for the brand identity. High-quality printed outer cartons are expected by retail buyers from lifestyle brands.
Recyclability. Corrugated board is recyclable in standard curbside paper and cardboard collection in both the US and UK. For candle and fragrance brands that market themselves as eco-conscious, corrugated is a natural fit. FSC chain-of-custody certification is available for brands that want to make explicit sustainability claims on their packaging.
Weight-to-strength ratio. Corrugated is strong relative to its weight. A well-specified shipper carton protects glass containers without adding excessive freight weight, which matters when shipping by sea freight over 20 to 28 days from India.
Formats Used in Candle and Fragrance Secondary Packaging
The candle and home fragrance category uses corrugated packaging across several distinct formats, each serving a different stage of the supply chain.
Shipper Cartons
The workhorse of the category. A shipper carton holds 6, 12, or 24 units of a candle or fragrance product for transport from a fulfilment centre or warehouse to a retail store or distribution hub. For glass containers, the carton needs internal partitions or cell dividers to prevent unit-to-unit contact during transit. These are built as flat-packed inserts that assemble at the packing station.
B-flute single wall construction is the standard for most candle shipper cartons. For heavier products - large glass vessels, multi-piece gift sets, or heavy ceramic formats - BC double wall provides the additional top-load resistance needed for palletised ocean freight. Our guide on single-wall vs double-wall corrugated boxes explains when to move up to double wall construction.
Cell Dividers and Partitions
Cell dividers are the most important component in corrugated secondary packaging for glass products. A partition set is a grid of slotted corrugated board strips that slot together to form individual cells inside the carton. Each glass unit sits in its own cell, with corrugated walls on all four sides preventing contact with adjacent units during transit.
Partition depth is matched to the height of the primary packaging. For a standard candle jar, a partition that extends at least 60% of the jar height is the minimum for effective impact protection. For diffuser bottles with narrow necks, full-height partitions are typically specified.
Partition board grade can match the outer carton or use a lighter grade. For most candle applications, a 3-ply single wall partition is sufficient. For heavy glass or premium products, 5-ply double wall partitions provide additional lateral rigidity.
Shelf-Ready Packaging
Natural and organic lifestyle retailers in the USA and UK - including Whole Foods, Planet Organic, and independent home goods stores - increasingly require shelf-ready packaging formats. These are corrugated trays or boxes with a perforated tear-away front panel that opens to display the product directly on the retail shelf.
E-flute is the standard for shelf-ready trays in this category. The thinner board allows tighter print registration and a cleaner retail presentation. Shelf-ready trays for candles are printed on the outer surface with product branding and SKU information.
E-Commerce Mailer Boxes
Direct-to-consumer candle brands selling through their own websites or subscription models need packaging that protects during last-mile delivery while delivering a premium unboxing experience. Printed mailer boxes with kraft or white interior surfaces and branded inner printing are standard in this segment. We cover this format in detail in our guide on mailer boxes for subscription brands sourced from India.
Flute Specification for Candle and Fragrance Packaging
Choosing the right flute type determines the protection level, print quality, and freight efficiency of the final box.
E-flute (1.5mm): Best for retail-facing formats where print quality and pack-out density matter more than compression strength. Used for shelf-ready trays, display boxes, and lightweight single-unit mailers. The fine flute profile gives a smooth external surface ideal for high-quality flexographic printing.
B-flute (3mm): The standard choice for candle shipper cartons. Better compression strength than E-flute for stacking on pallets, with a solid print surface for outer carton branding. Partition sets inside B-flute cartons provide the unit protection required for glass containers.
BC double wall (7mm): Specified for large format glass vessels, heavy gift sets, or fragile ceramic fragrance products requiring maximum protection. The BC combination uses two flute layers for significantly higher top-load and impact resistance than single wall construction. Our heavy-duty corrugated boxes guide covers double wall specification in full.
Custom Printing for Candle and Fragrance Brands
The corrugated outer carton is a brand asset in the candle and fragrance category, not just a functional packaging component. Retail buyers from lifestyle chains evaluate secondary packaging aesthetics as part of their range review process.
At Whizzpack, we offer flexographic printing in 1 to 4 Pantone-matched colours as standard. Water-based inks are used throughout, maintaining recyclability and meeting food-adjacent safety standards. For premium retail finishes, litho-lamination applies a printed paper layer to the outer face of the corrugated board, achieving print quality comparable to folding carton.
Brand elements commonly printed on candle secondary packaging include the logo, brand colour, fragrance name, collection identity, barcode, and retailer-specific compliance information. Regulatory requirements for product labelling - country of origin, importer details - are also printed directly on the outer carton in most retail programmes. A full guide to the custom printing process is in our custom printed boxes buyer's guide.
Eco-Friendly Credentials for Candle and Fragrance Brands
The candle and home fragrance consumer is typically motivated by wellbeing, quality, and values. Sustainability is a significant purchasing driver in this category, and brands face growing pressure from both consumers and retailers to demonstrate responsible packaging choices.
Corrugated board is well positioned here. FSC-certified board is available from Whizzpack with chain-of-custody documentation for brands making explicit FSC claims. Unbleached kraft liner avoids chlorine bleaching chemicals. Water-based inks eliminate solvent emissions. And corrugated board is fully recyclable in standard household collection.
For brands in the natural or organic segment, corrugated secondary packaging made from recycled content liner or virgin kraft with water-based inks aligns naturally with the product story. Our broader approach to eco-friendly packaging from India covers FSC and sustainable material options across our full product range.
Biodegradability is also a relevant claim in this consumer segment. Standard corrugated board without PE coating breaks down under composting conditions, which is a meaningful sustainability credential for candle brands with a strong environmental identity.
The Import Process for Candle and Fragrance Brands
For candle and fragrance brands that have reached the volume where direct import makes financial sense, the process follows a predictable sequence.
Specification. Dimensions for each SKU (inner L x W x H), flute grade, liner spec, partition configuration, number of print colours, and any litho-lamination requirements are agreed before sampling begins.
Sampling. Physical samples including partition sets are produced and shipped air freight within 7 to 10 working days of specification agreement. This stage allows the brand's team to test the partition fit with actual glass containers, check print colour matching, and verify the carton structure under load.
Production. Standard production for a full container runs 18 to 28 working days from approved sample. Orders involving litho-lamination require an additional 5 to 7 working days.
Freight. Ocean freight from Mundra Port to US East Coast runs 20 to 28 days. UK ports (Felixstowe, Southampton) run 20 to 25 days. Export documentation is prepared by our team. A complete walkthrough of the import process is in our guide on how to import corrugated boxes from India.
Ongoing supply. After the first successful container, most candle brands establish a rolling order schedule. With seasonal peaks in the fragrance category - Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day - forward planning 12 to 16 weeks ahead for seasonal carton orders is standard practice.
What to Include in Your Initial Enquiry
To move from enquiry to sample as efficiently as possible, the following information helps:
- SKU list: How many different carton sizes and specifications do you need?
- Primary packaging dimensions: The external dimensions of the glass container or primary pack, including any label or sleeve thickness
- Units per outer: How many units go into each shipper carton?
- Print requirement: Number of Pantone colours and whether artwork files exist
- Partition requirement: Whether partitions are required and the approximate height of the glass container
