Corrugated Boxes for Wine and Spirits Brands: A Sourcing Guide from India

Wine and spirits is one of the most technically demanding categories in corrugated packaging. A standard 12-bottle wine case must hold up to 18kg of glass and liquid under palletised sea freight, resist humidity inside a shipping container, and arrive at a distributor or wine merchant with every bottle intact. Get the specification wrong and the losses compound quickly.

For wine and spirits brands sourcing corrugated boxes at scale, factory-direct procurement from India offers lower landed costs, FSC-certified board, and the customisation capability that premium brands require. This guide covers what buyers need to specify.

Two Very Different Use Cases

Wine and spirits brands typically have two separate packaging requirements, and the specification differs significantly between them.

Retail wholesale cases carry bottles to distributors, importers, and wine merchants. These are 6-bottle or 12-bottle RSC boxes, opened in a stockroom and discarded. The priority is compression strength to survive palletised sea freight, dimensional accuracy to fit standard pallet configurations, and cell partitions to prevent bottle-to-bottle contact. Print is secondary.

Premium and direct-to-consumer gift boxes are part of the product experience. A single-bottle presentation box, a mixed case for a wine club subscription, or a spirits gift set arrives in a customer's hands as a brand statement. Custom printing, premium finishes, and interior fitment matter here in a way they do not for wholesale cases.

Most Indian corrugated manufacturers can supply both formats. The question is specifying correctly for each.

Flute Selection for Glass Bottle Packaging

Getting the flute grade wrong is the most common mistake wine buyers make on a first order. For a full technical comparison of how flute profiles affect strength, print quality, and weight, see our B, C, and E flute comparison guide.

C flute (4mm) is the standard for wine and spirits wholesale cases. It delivers the compression strength needed to support palletised loads of 12 x 750ml bottles, typically weighing 15 to 18kg per case, and provides adequate cushioning for glass during transit. Most wine cases for bulk distribution use C flute.

E flute (1.2mm) is used for retail-facing packaging where print quality is the priority. Single-bottle presentation boxes, point-of-sale display units, and premium gift boxes for spirits brands use E flute. The smooth outer surface takes flexographic and litho-laminate printing cleanly, giving brands control over shelf presentation.

BC double-wall combines a B flute and C flute medium for maximum compression strength. Used for heavy-format bottles (magnums and larger), export cases travelling long sea freight routes, or any application where stack loads during container transit are particularly high. For more on single-wall versus double-wall configuration trade-offs, see our single wall vs double wall corrugated guide.

Format Recommended Flute Reason
12-bottle wholesale case C flute Compression strength for stack loads
6-bottle retail case C flute or BC double Stack weight and glass protection
Single-bottle gift box E flute Print quality, retail presentation
Magnum or export case BC double-wall Maximum stacking and transit strength
Spirits gift set (DTC) E flute or EB double Premium print combined with rigidity

Cell Partitions and Bottle Dividers

Cell partitions are the defining specification element for wine and spirits packaging. A wine case without partitions allows bottles to contact each other in transit, which means breakage even in well-made corrugated board.

The two main partition systems are:

Slot-lock cell dividers. Pre-cut corrugated strips that interlock to create a grid of individual cells, one per bottle. This is the standard for wholesale wine cases. Cell depth should match the bottle height minus 10 to 15mm, so the top of the partition sits below the bottle shoulder and does not prevent the case from closing.

Moulded pulp inserts. For premium gift packaging, moulded pulp pads cradle individual bottles and provide both protection and a premium unboxing presentation. These are typically specified for spirits gift sets and single-bottle luxury packaging.

Key questions to confirm with your supplier before ordering:

  • What board grade is used for the partition strips? Using lighter-weight board for the partitions to reduce cost compromises protection, even if the outer case is correctly specified.
  • Are the cells sized to your specific bottle dimensions, or are they standard sizes? Bottles vary significantly in diameter and height across wine styles and spirits categories.
  • How are the partitions secured in the case? Slot-lock dividers that are accurately cut hold their position in transit without gluing.

Custom Printing for Wine and Spirits Packaging

Wine brands invest heavily in label design and brand identity. The corrugated case is increasingly an extension of that. For wholesale cases going to independent wine merchants and fine dining accounts, a cleanly branded outer case communicates quality at the point of receipt.

Flexographic printing is the standard for corrugated. Up to four-colour separation is available from most Indian factories, covering brand colour palettes, product photography, and typography cleanly.

Litho-laminate printing applies an offset-printed paper sheet to the outer liner before box conversion. The result is photo-quality print on corrugated: sharp gradients, high resolution, and the option for foil or emboss elements. Spirits brands using their cases as retail display or gifting formats typically specify litho laminate.

For brands developing branded corrugated packaging for the first time, our custom printed corrugated boxes guide for e-commerce brands covers artwork preparation, colour matching, and print file requirements in detail.

Certifications That Matter

FSC certification. UK and European wine importers increasingly require FSC-certified board for their secondary packaging, particularly for premium and organic producers. Indian corrugated manufacturers exporting to the European market hold FSC chain-of-custody certificates and can supply board from certified sources. Verify the certificate directly at info.fsc.org before confirming an order.

Food contact compliance. Corrugated boxes for wine and spirits do not contact the product directly - the bottle, cork, and capsule provide full separation. However, large retail buyers sometimes require a food-contact statement for packaging used alongside consumable products. Indian export factories can supply food-contact board declarations on request.

ISO 9001. Quality management certification is a baseline for buyers who need consistent dimensional tolerances and print registration across repeat orders. For a wine merchant receiving cases across multiple production runs, consistency is critical for storage and retail display.

Recycled content declaration. FSC-certified Kraft liner with 70 to 100 percent recycled fibre content is standard from most Indian mills producing for the export market. Brands communicating sustainable packaging choices to wholesale buyers or retail customers can request a recycled content declaration for each production run.

What to Ask Your Supplier Before Ordering

Before confirming a production run for wine or spirits packaging, ask these questions:

  1. Do you produce cell partitions in-house? A supplier that outsources partition fabrication introduces a second point of specification risk. In-house partition production means the board grade, cell sizing, and quality control all sit under one roof.

  2. What compression strength does your C flute achieve? Request an Edge Crush Test (ECT) rating for the board grade proposed. For a 12-bottle wine case on a palletised sea freight shipment, a minimum of 44 ECT is the standard benchmark.

  3. Do you hold FSC chain-of-custody certification? Ask for the certificate number and verify it at info.fsc.org. A certificate held by the board mill alone does not cover the finished box - the converter needs its own chain-of-custody certificate.

  4. What dimensional tolerance do you work to? For wine cases fitting standard pallet configurations, internal dimensions within plus or minus 2mm is the benchmark. Tighter tolerances are achievable on litho-laminate boxes.

  5. Can you supply a compression test report for the finished case? Box Compression Test (BCT) values confirm stacking strength for the specific box dimensions and board grade. A factory supplying export-grade wine cases should be able to provide this as standard.

Lead Times and MOQ

Standard production lead times from an Indian corrugated manufacturer to UK or EU port run 35 to 45 days from approved artwork:

  • 7 to 10 days for plate making and pre-production approval
  • 10 to 15 days for the production run, including partition fabrication
  • 20 to 28 days sea freight transit from Mundra or JNPT to UK or EU ports

Minimum order quantities for custom wine and spirits cases from India vary by complexity:

  • Plain RSC wine cases with slot-lock partitions: typically 2,000 units per SKU
  • Flexo-printed cases with partitions: typically 5,000 units per SKU
  • Litho-laminate gift boxes: typically 1,000 to 2,000 units depending on board grade and finish

For brands with multiple SKUs, different varietals, a red and white range, or multiple spirits products, Indian factories will sometimes combine SKUs in a single production run to help buyers reach minimums more efficiently.

Why Source from India

India has a mature corrugated manufacturing sector with export capability across all major markets. For wine and spirits brands, three factors make India a compelling sourcing route.

Cost advantage. Factory-direct pricing removes the European or US converter margin. At annual volumes above 20,000 cases, the difference in landed cost per unit is commercially significant, even after sea freight is factored in.

Cell partition capability. Indian corrugated manufacturers with export experience produce slot-lock partitions in-house alongside the outer case. This means the entire pack, case and dividers, is produced in one facility with consistent board grades throughout. Sourcing the outer case and partitions from different suppliers creates specification risk.

Sustainable sourcing at scale. FSC-certified board, water-based inks, and recycled liner content are standard options from Indian export-grade manufacturers. For wine brands with sustainability commitments to their wholesale buyers or retail customers, these credentials are available without the premium that European eco-positioned suppliers typically add.
