The sample stage is where most problems in corrugated box sourcing from India are caught - or should be. A buyer who skips samples to save time ends up testing their specification on a full production run. At 10,000 units per container, that is an expensive test.
Getting a corrugated box sample from India is a straightforward process, but it works better when you know what to send the factory, what you are testing for, and how to give feedback that results in a correct production order. This guide covers all of it.
What You Send the Factory
Before a factory can produce a sample, they need a complete specification. Vague requests produce generic samples. A corrugated box sample specification includes:
Dimensions (internal): Length x Width x Height in millimetres. Always specify internal dimensions - these determine what fits inside the box. External dimensions are a function of the board thickness.
Wall construction: Single wall, double wall, or triple wall. If you are not sure, say so and describe your product weight and transit distance - the factory will recommend.
Flute type: B, C, E, or BC double wall. If you are not sure, ask for samples in both C and BC double wall for comparison - the cost difference on two samples is negligible.
Board grade: Either the liner GSM (e.g., 150/120/150) or an ECT (Edge Crush Test) requirement. If you have an existing box that performs well, share its test certificate and ask the factory to match or exceed those values.
Box style: RSC (Regular Slotted Carton) is the most common. State if you need FOL (Full Overlap), HSC (Half Slotted Container), or a die-cut custom shape.
Print specification: Number of colours, Pantone references if applicable, artwork files (AI or print-ready PDF). For a sample, a one-colour print proof is standard even if your production order is multi-colour.
Closure type: Standard flap closure, tuck-in, or self-locking bottom.
If you are sending samples with the intention of putting the box through a compression or drop test, tell the factory upfront. They can specify the board grade accordingly and provide test certificates with the sample.
What the Factory Sends You
A corrugated box sample from India typically includes:
The assembled box in your exact specification. It should be sealed in the configuration you will use in production (top flaps glued, or folded flat for assembly).
A board cross-section sample - a cut piece of the corrugated board showing the liner layers and flute. This lets you visually confirm the ply count, flute height, and liner colour.
Board test certificate - the burst strength (Mullen test, PSI or kPa) and/or ECT rating for the specific board batch used. This is non-negotiable: if a factory cannot provide test data with a sample, do not proceed to production.
Dimensioned drawing - a flat-cut diagram showing the die-cut dimensions of the box before folding. Compare this against your specification to confirm accuracy.
How Long Does a Corrugated Box Sample Take?
From the date you send a complete specification to the factory, the typical sample timeline is:
| Stage | Working Days |
|---|---|
| Factory produces sample box | 5 to 8 days |
| Air freight to US (East Coast) | 3 to 5 days |
| Air freight to UK | 2 to 4 days |
| Total: India to US/UK warehouse | 10 to 14 working days |
Some factories can fast-track samples in 3 to 5 days if you flag urgency. Standard air freight from Rajkot or Ahmedabad to the US East Coast runs 4 to 5 days door-to-door.
This is significantly faster than the 4 to 6 weeks it takes to receive a production run, which is why the sample investment - typically 2 to 3 weeks of lead time - is worth making even if you are on a tight timeline.
What to Test When the Sample Arrives
When your corrugated box sample arrives from India, test it against the actual conditions your production boxes will face:
Dimensional accuracy: Measure the internal dimensions with a tape measure. A deviation of more than 2mm is worth flagging to the factory, especially if your box is dimensioned tightly around a specific product.
Board compression: Stack boxes with the actual product weight inside and leave under load for 24 to 48 hours. This simulates warehouse stacking. Single wall boxes should hold their shape under 6 to 8 boxes high (with contents); double wall should hold 10 to 12 high.
Drop test: Drop the filled, sealed box from 60 to 90cm (knee height) onto its base, then onto each face and edge. This simulates realistic handling. Products should not shift significantly and the box should not split at the seams.
Print quality check: Compare print colours against your approved Pantone references. Check registration accuracy at the corners. Ink should not rub off under normal handling friction.
Moisture exposure (if relevant): If your boxes will be stored in humid conditions or exported in summer monsoon season, leave a sealed, filled sample in a humid environment (50%+ relative humidity) for 48 hours and repeat the compression test. Corrugated board can lose 20 to 40% of its compression strength at high humidity.

How to Give Feedback to the Factory
If the sample requires changes, provide specific, measurable feedback rather than general observations:
Dimensions: "Internal height is 248mm, specification is 250mm. Please adjust to 250 ± 1mm internal."
Board strength: "ECT on the test certificate is 29 lb/in. Our requirement is 32 ECT minimum. Please revise the board specification to meet this."
Print: "Pantone 287 C blue is printing as Pantone 286 C. Please adjust ink mix and resend a print proof."
Structural: "Box base flaps are not meeting at the centre when sealed - outer flaps overhang by approximately 8mm. Please check the die-cut dimensions against the technical drawing."
Factories respond well to specific, measured feedback. Vague notes like "the box doesn't seem strong enough" result in another round of ambiguity. If you are unsure how to articulate a problem, photograph it clearly and annotate the image.

Converting a Sample Approval to a Production Order
Once you have approved the sample, your purchase order to the factory should reference the approved sample explicitly. Include:
- Date of sample approval and your order reference number
- Exact specification as confirmed by the approved sample
- Any deviations from the original specification corrected during sampling
- Required production volume and delivery timeline
- Port of loading (FOB Mundra, JNPT, or other) and Incoterms
- Packaging and palletisation specification (pallet dimensions, cartons per pallet, stretch wrap requirement)
Request a pre-shipment inspection or video walkthrough of the production run before loading. Most Indian factories accept this. It catches issues - a board grade substitution, a print colour drift, a stacking issue - before the container is sealed.
Sample Costs
Most Indian corrugated manufacturers charge for samples. Typical costs:
- Blank (unprinted) sample in standard size: $20 to $50 USD
- Printed sample (one to two colours): $50 to $100 USD
- Sample with custom die-cut: $80 to $150 USD (includes tooling for the cutting die)
- Air freight to US or UK: $25 to $60 USD depending on weight and destination
The factory often waives sample cost for buyers placing a committed production order. If they do not offer to waive it, ask - most will.
What Good Looks Like
A corrugated box manufacturer in India that is genuinely ready for export business will:
- Respond to a sample request within 24 to 48 hours with a clear timeline
- Send the sample with test certificates (not on request, proactively)
- Provide a dimensioned flat-cut drawing with the sample
- Accept specific feedback and turn around a corrected sample within 7 to 10 working days
- Reference the approved sample explicitly in the production order acknowledgement
If a factory is slow to respond, cannot provide test data, or sends a sample that does not match your specification without explanation, these are reliable signals about how production will go.
